an annual dilation for diabetic patients is essential

Depending on how well-controlled a patient’s blood sugar is, the linings of the blood vessels in their eyes (and by extension, the blood vessels throughout their entire body) can become weakened. This can cause the blood vessels to leak, and may result in damage to the retina and reduction in vision.

The eyes are the only part of the body that allows us an unobstructed, real-time view of blood vessels in action. It is important for all diabetic patients to have a dilated fundus exam annually, no matter how well-controlled their blood sugar may be. In the event that any blood vessel damage is noted, appropriate retinal imaging is performed, and Dr. Wolfe will work with the patient’s primary care doctor on appropriate treatment plans.
